There may be frost on the mainland, but here in “America’s Caribbean,” it’s anything but cold. Enjoy some sun and check out our top things to see and do in the Florida Keys this winter. Warning: Wanderlust ahead.
Go Fish
The Florida Keys is the perfect spot for a winter fishing trip. Head to Islamorada for the best sailfishing, or catch snapper, grouper and grunts off the North American Coral Reef Tract. You can also access Everglades National Park waters from the Upper Keys, where you’re almost guaranteed to catch Spanish mackerel; they school up in the millions.
Travel Deeper
Literally. Dive into Looe Key Coral Reef, close to Big Pine Key, and see the incredible sea life that congregate here; the grunts, butterfly fish, angelfish, and more. It is one of those few places that is extraordinary for snorkeling and scuba divers, with depths of up to 100ft in the deeper area, and from 6ft to 30ft in the shallows.
Meet the Neighbors
Have a shell of a time getting up close to the wildlife at the Turtle Hospital, located next door to Tranquility Bay Resort. The hospital is dedicated to the health and preservation of sea turtles, and offers guided, educational tours, and a behind-the-scenes look at the rehabilitation of sick and injured turtles.
Be a Culture Vulture
Head to Key West and visit the home and gardens of America’s legendary, late writer, Ernest Hemingway. Step back in time and visit the place that witnessed the most prolific period of his career with regular educated tours. Plus, meet the dozens of cats that live here – all descendants from Hemingway’s own!
Did Someone Say “Beach Day?”
It might be winter, but in the Florida Keys every day is a beach day. Our top tip? The manmade serene retreat at Sombrero Beach – one of the most popular spots in Marathon with locals and travelers in the know. Take a dip in the roped off swimming area, play on the volleyball court, or sun yourself on the soft sands.
Sink into Tranquility
You didn’t think we would miss ourselves off the list, did you? With waterfront and water view beach houses, tropical guest rooms, and more, you will find your oasis here at Tranquility Bay. There are three pools, a putting green, and on-site watersports to keep you entertained by day, while at night dine in Marathon’s number one rated restaurant for local cuisine on TripAdvisor, Butterfly Café.
